For millennia, whole leaf tea has been cultivated using traditional hand-picking and sun-drying practices. To expedite the drying process, many estates found that fanning the freshly plucked tea leaves caused them to dry more quickly. It also proved useful in separating broken pieces from the full leaves.

Centuries later, a discerning American businessman noticed that a layer of broken tea bits and fine tea dust had accumulated on the floor and could be swept up, collected, and placed into paper tea bags to offer consumers a more affordable option. Tea and dust quickly became the modern standard in America.
